Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies
FIAS is a joint private‑public center for basic theoretical science in Frankfurt, Germany. It is located on the Goethe University Frankfurt‑Riedberg campus and was founded in 2003. The institute brings together theorists from biology, chemistry, neuroscience, physics, mathematics and computer science to work in one place. It operates as an independent research institution while closely linking with Goethe University and nearby centers, including the Center for Scientific Computing, Center for Membrane Proteomics, Center for Biomolecular Resonance, the Stern‑Gerlach Centre, GSI in Darmstadt, and the Max Planck Institutes in Mainz and Darmstadt. Enrico Schleiff chaired the board from 2018 to 2020, after which Volker Lindenstruth took over. The founding directors were Walter Greiner and Wolf Singer. Scientists from FIAS and Goethe University educate graduate students in the Frankfurt International Graduate School for Science (FIGSS).
