Old Town in the Green Groves is a children's historical novel by Cynthia Rylant, published in 2002 by HarperCollins. It is based on notes from Laura Ingalls Wilder and other knowledge about her life, but it is not officially part of the Little House series. The story covers a period between the end of On the Banks of Plum Creek and the start of By the Shores of Silver Lake, following the Ingalls family as they face hard times in Walnut Grove, Minnesota, sell their farm, and move to Burr Oak, Iowa, where Pa runs a hotel. While traveling, they stay with relatives in South Troy, Minnesota, where Charles Ingalls dies at nine months old on August 27, 1876. Grace Ingalls is born in Burr Oak on May 23, 1877. The family later moves again, back to Minnesota and then to Dakota Territory, where By the Shores of Silver Lake is set.
