Fragile Thing
Fragile Thing is a song by the Scottish rock band Big Country. It was released on 9 August 1999 as the lead single from their eighth album, Driving to Damascus. The track, written by Stuart Adamson and Bruce Watson and produced by Rafe McKenna and the band, runs 3 minutes and 43 seconds and was released on Track Record. It features a duet between Stuart Adamson and singer Eddi Reader, and a music video was made to promote it.
The song is about loss and redemption. Bassist Tony Butler called it a slow, ballad-like tune that fits Radio 2 listening, and he later described its haunting vibe and how Reader’s contribution makes it beautiful.
Fragile Thing received radio airplay and reached number 69 on the UK Singles Chart. A limited edition box-style CD caused a chart-eligibility issue with CIN, who ruled that its sales wouldn’t count toward the chart because of packaging rules. When the CD was recalled, some retailers pulled all editions. Butler said the episode hurt the band and the album’s commercial prospects.
Critics offered mixed notes. AllMusic praised the moving harmony between vocals and guitars, while Q noted only a hint of country influence. Louder Sound called it a well-crafted, country-tinged ballad with a haunting quality.
