Football Association of Yugoslavia
Football Association of Yugoslavia (FSJ) was the governing body of football in Yugoslavia. It organized the Yugoslav First League, the national team, and the second leagues for the six republics. It was founded in April 1919 in Zagreb as Jugoslavenski nogometni savez, with a major administrative hub in Zagreb and its headquarters in Belgrade from 1930 to 2003.
The FSJ joined FIFA in 1921 (temporarily) and 1923 (permanently). It later changed its name to Nogometni savez Jugoslavije. After disputes between Zagreb and Belgrade, the federation was dissolved in 1929, and the headquarters moved to Belgrade in 1930, where it became Fudbalski Savez Jugoslavije.
In 1939 it was reestablished as the Supreme Football Association of Yugoslavia, grouping the Slovenian, Croatian, and Serbian football federations under new regional subassociations. The organization joined UEFA in 1954.
When SFR Yugoslavia dissolved in 1992, Serbia and Montenegro continued the federation as FR Yugoslavia, retaining FIFA and UEFA membership. In 2003, the Football Association of Yugoslavia was replaced by the Football Association of Serbia and Montenegro as the country’s name changed.
