Philips Sports Manager of the Year 2009
On 9 December at the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin, the Philips Sports Manager of the Year Awards for 2009 were held. Declan Kidney won the top award for the second year in a row after guiding Ireland to the Six Nations title, their first Grand Slam since 1948, and an unbeaten autumn against Australia, Argentina and Fiji. He had also won the monthly award twice in 2009. Other honorees included Michael Cheika (Leinster’s Heineken Cup-winning coach), Pat Fenlon (League of Ireland champion manager), GAA managers Brian Cody, Jack O’Connor, Conor Counihan and Mick O’Dwyer, and Giovanni Trapattoni, Ireland’s soccer manager, whose team reached the World Cup play-offs but were eliminated in controversial circumstances.
