First League of Serbia and Montenegro
First League of Serbia and Montenegro (1992–2006) was the top football league in the union of Serbia and Montenegro. It started after the breakup of Yugoslavia as the First League of FR Yugoslavia and later became known as the Serbia and Montenegro Super League. The league had 16 clubs each season and was the highest level of football in the country. Teams could be relegated to the Second League of Serbia and Montenegro (1992–2005) or, in the final season (2005–2006), to the Serbian First League or the Montenegrin First League after Montenegro’s split from the union.
Teams from this league could qualify for European competitions such as the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, and UEFA Intertoto Cup. The last champions were Red Star Belgrade (2005–06), and Partizan holds the most titles with eight.
In its early years (1993–1998) the league used a two-group format (Group A and Group B) with mid-season group changes; this was abandoned after 1998, and the league returned to a single table. The FR Yugoslavia was renamed Serbia and Montenegro in 2003. When Montenegro became independent in 2006, the league ended and Serbian and Montenegrin football began running separate leagues (the Serbian Super League and the Montenegrin First League).
