In Performance at the White House
In Performance at the White House is a U.S. PBS TV series that features performances held in the White House, the home of the U.S. president. It began in 1978 during President Jimmy Carter’s term. The first season had five hour-long programs filmed in the East Room, with artists such as Mikhail Baryshnikov, Patricia McBride, Vladimir Horowitz, Leontyne Price, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Andres Segovia. A notable 1988 episode during President Ronald Reagan’s term featured Marvin Hamlisch with the cast of A Chorus Line, plus Shirley Jones, Stubby Kaye, Lee Roy Reams, and the Marine Band. In 2009, Paul McCartney received the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from President Barack Obama on the show; his episode included Elvis Costello, Dave Grohl, Herbie Hancock, Emmylou Harris, Faith Hill, the Jonas Brothers, Lang Lang, Corinne Bailey Rae, Jack White, and Stevie Wonder. Violinist Itzhak Perlman hosted four episodes in the 1982/83 season.
