Father Callahan is a fictional priest created by Stephen King. He first appears in the novel Salem’s Lot (1975) and later shows up in The Dark Tower series (The Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla; The Dark Tower VI: Song of Susannah; The Dark Tower).

In Salem’s Lot, Callahan is an American Roman Catholic priest in the Maine town of Jerusalem’s Lot. He struggles with drinking and a shaky faith. After a vampire named Barlow infects the town, Callahan helps writer Ben Mears, teacher Matt Burke, and a boy named Mark Petrie fight the evil. He leads a daytime attack on Barlow’s hiding place, but the vampires vanish and the town appears to be saved. Barlow kills Mark’s parents and later mortally injures Callahan. Facing Barlow, Callahan’s faith falters, the cross fails, and Barlow forces Callahan to drink vampire blood. Callahan leaves town in shame and becomes a wanderer in New York City, where he can sense vampires but is drawn deeper into despair and alcoholism.

In New York, Callahan works at a homeless shelter and befriends people like Lupe Delgado and Rowan Magruder. He learns about three kinds of vampires and vows to fight them after Lupe dies from AIDS. His war against vampires brings him into contact with the Crimson King and the Low Men. The Hitler Brothers pursue him, and Callahan is briefly rescued by Calvin Tower and Aaron Deepneau. He is later lured into a building by a Low Man and vampires, and, instead of becoming infected, he commits suicide.

Callahan’s fate takes a magical turn when he wakes at the Way Station and meets Walter o’Dim, who gives him Black Thirteen, a dangerous magic item. Black Thirteen sends him to the Doorway Cave near Calla Bryn Sturgis, where he lives for about five years and tries to teach the locals his faith. Every ~23 years, wolves—really robotic agents of the Crimson King—raid the Calla and steal children, turning the remaining kids into “roont” (damaged) humans.

When Roland and his ka-tet arrive, Callahan asks for their help to defeat the wolves. They succeed, but Susannah becomes possessed by Mia and escapes through the Doorway Cave. Callahan finds a copy of Salem’s Lot in which he is a major character, which makes him question reality. The ka-tet then plans to split up: Roland and Eddie go to Susannah in New York, while Jake, Callahan, and Oy go to Maine in 1977 to meet Calvin Tower and, indirectly, Stephen King.

The group is swept through the Door and separated again: Roland and Eddie end up in Maine, Jake, Callahan, and Oy in New York City in 1999. Jake and Callahan find Black Thirteen and stash it in a World Trade Center locker, hoping it stays dormant until Roland arrives. They go to the Dixie Pig, where they ambush the Low Men and vampires. Callahan loses faith in the power of crosses and sigils and ultimately shoots himself rather than be overwhelmed. He dies, and Roland later shouts his name in memory when he reaches the Dark Tower.

In the Dark Tower books, Callahan’s life is about redemption. He is remembered as a priest who fought against evil and found a truer faith.

Adaptations of Callahan have varied. In the 1979 Salem’s Lot miniseries, he is a minor character played by James Gallery. Nigel Anthony voiced him in the BBC radio adaptation (1995). James Cromwell played Callahan in the 2004 Salem’s Lot miniseries, where Callahan’s arc is extended and darker. In 2024, John Benjamin Hickey portrayed Callahan in a newer adaptation.
