Face Value (1918 film)

Face Value is a 1918 American silent drama directed by Robert Z. Leonard and starring Mae Murray. Universal released the film through its Bluebird Photoplays unit. It runs about five reels and is silent with English intertitles. A copy exists at the George Eastman House Motion Picture Collection.

Plot
Joan, a waif raised by the keeper of a boarding house, runs away and works as a cashier at a Childs Restaurant but quits when the manager makes advances. She is forced to steal by Louie and is caught, then sent to a state reformatory. While being transported, she escapes by jumping from a moving train into a river, swims ashore, and is found by Bertram, the son of wealthy parents. He brings her home and she stays there. Louie attempts to control her but fails. Bertram and Joan eventually marry, despite her past.

Censorship
The Chicago Board of Censors required cuts, including a scene of a young woman coming from behind a post and fainting in a man’s arms, and a scene of a man stealing a pocketbook.
