Jim Buntine
Gladys Selby "Jim" Buntine (née Spurling) was an Australian leader in the Girl Guides. She was born on 7 September 1901 in Fitzroy, Victoria, and died on 15 July 1992 at Kilsyth, Victoria, aged 90.
Education and early life: She attended Merton Hall from 1913 to 1917 and later studied at a finishing school in Vallois, France.
Marriage and family: She married Dr Martyn Arnold Buntine on 17 May 1926. They were known as Arnold and Jim and had two sons, John and Robert (Robert lived from 1929 to 2014). Her husband was a schoolmaster who became a headmaster, and she was considered an ideal headmaster’s wife.
Girl Guides career: From the early 1930s, Jim Buntine worked with the Girl Guides in Western Australia. After moving to the eastern states, she joined the Victorian State Council. From 1962 to 1968 she served as the Australian Chief Commissioner of the Girl Guides, based in Sydney. She attended Guiding events around the world in Denmark, Britain, Malaya, Japan, and India, and in 1967 she escorted the world chief guide on an Australian tour.
Death: She passed away on 15 July 1992 at Kilsyth Retirement Village in Kilsyth, Victoria.
