Euproctis

Euproctis is a genus of tussock moths in the family Erebidae. It was first described by Jacob Hübner in 1819. These moths are found all over the world, in many regions including Africa, Asia, Europe and Australia. Today, scientists know that Euproctis actually contains a large number of distinct lineages that are not all closely related, so the group may be revised in the future.

Key features (easy to recognize):
- Palps (mouthparts) project forward well beyond the eyes.
- Antennae are comb-like on both sexes; in males the branches are long and often have spines.
- Mid tibia has one pair of long spurs; hind tibia has two pairs.
- Females have a large tuft of hair at the rear end.
- Wing pattern: forewings have a specific arrangement of veins starting near the cell; hindwings have their own characteristic vein pattern.
