Eric Martin Strobel (born June 5, 1958) is a former American ice hockey forward best known for being part of the United States’ 1980 Olympic gold-medal team, the “Miracle on Ice.” He grew up in Rochester, Minnesota, and played college hockey at the University of Minnesota, helping the Gophers win the 1979 NCAA title. He also played for Team USA at the 1979 World Championships in Moscow. Drafted 133rd overall in 1978 by the Buffalo Sabres, Strobel never played in the NHL; he spent time with the Rochester Americans (AHL) before breaking his ankle in the 1980 playoffs and retiring. After hockey, he worked in phone sales in Apple Valley, Minnesota, coached youth hockey, and started a family with his wife Kim; they have two daughters, Leslie and Krista. His father, Art Strobel, played for the New York Rangers. In 2006 he suffered a minor stroke but recovered after treatment and rehabilitation. Strobel appears in archival footage of the gold medal ceremony in the film Miracle, and was portrayed by Robbie MacGregor in the 2004 movie Miracle.
