Elsie Corlett
Elsie Alice Corlett (2 September 1902 – 28 March 1988) was an English amateur golfer from Lytham St Annes. She was a leading figure in women’s golf in the 1920s and 1930s.
Key highlights:
- Women’s Amateur Championship: Reached the final in 1938 and was a semi-finalist in 1934 and 1937. She lost the 1938 final to Helen Holm.
- English Women’s Amateur Championship: Won the title in 1938 and was runner-up in 1926 and 1935.
- Curtis Cup: Played for Great Britain & Ireland in 1932 and 1938; she was the non-playing captain in 1964.
- Lancashire Amateur Championship: Won titles in 1927 and 1929.
- Team appearances: Represented England in the Women’s Home Internationals from 1927 to 1939 (England had several victories in those years). She also competed for Britain & Ireland in the Vagliano Trophy, with GB&I’s victories in 1931 and 1936–1939.
Personal life:
- Born in Lytham St Annes and died there in 1988 at the age of 85. Her contributions to the sport are remembered by golf historians and the Women Golfers’ Museum.
