Elsas station
Elsas railway station is in the community of Elsas, in the Unorganized North part of Algoma District, northeastern Ontario, Canada. It lies on the Canadian National Railway transcontinental main line, between Agate to the west and Oatland to the east, and Via Rail’s Canadian trains stop there. The station sits on the northern shore of Kapuskasing Lake, the source of the Kapuskasing River. The line was built as part of the Canadian Northern Railway between 1913 and 1915, and sawmills and other industries along the route began after World War I. In 1920, the Continental Wood Products Corporation chose this site for a mill, and the station was named after Herman Elsas, the CWPC president. The mill closed in 1928 when the remaining timber berths were sold to Spruce Falls Paper and Power in Kapuskasing. The closest CN passing track was at Agate, about 3 miles to the west. The station is owned by Via Rail and serves the Canadian transcontinental trains.
