Dan P. Jones
Dan P. Jones was an American politician from Arizona. A Democrat, he helped build Mesa and was active in the LDS Church. Born in Fairview, Utah, he moved to Arizona in 1877 and helped establish Mesa. He married Mary E. Merrill, and they had 12 children. Jones was a farmer and led irrigation efforts, serving 17 years as chairman of the Salt River Valley Water Users’ Association.
He started public service in Lehi as justice of the peace from 1901 to 1926. He served in the Arizona House of Representatives for Maricopa County during the 1st Legislature (1912–1914) and again during the 5th and 6th Legislatures (1921–1924), and was Speaker of the House in the 6th Legislature.
Jones was elected to the Arizona State Senate from Maricopa County and served a single term (1927–1928). After his Senate term, he was the Senate chaplain for the 9th Legislature and the following two sessions. He remained active in Mesa’s education system as board president. He died after a heart attack on July 6, 1935, in Mesa; his body lay in state at the Arizona State Capitol.
