Greatest Hits Vol. III is the debut studio album by Umphrey's McGee, released on May 15, 1998 by Street Gold Records. Recorded in 1998, it came out about eight months after the band formed and was put together quickly to help them book local gigs. Although the liner notes say Dirty White Couch Studios, the recording was actually done in the back of a Johnstone Supply warehouse in South Bend, Indiana, by Andy Peck and Mike Brinker. The first pressing had 400 CDs and even an error on the spine, and it sold out in its first week of September. A second pressing of about 1,000 copies followed, including a note about new member Andy Farag (who wouldn’t debut until the next release, Songs for Older Women). This is the only Umphrey's McGee album to feature the original four-member lineup. Some songs were originally written and performed by the band’s former project Tashi Station, which included Brendan Bayliss and Ryan Stasik. Although Greatest Hits Vol. III has been out of print for years, many of its tracks are still played live. The album was recorded and mixed by Andy Peck and Mike Brinker in South Bend.
