Elisabeth of Nassau-Siegen (1488–1559)
Elisabeth of Nassau-Siegen (1488–3 June 1559) was a German noblewoman from the House of Nassau-Siegen. She was the eldest daughter of Count John V of Nassau-Siegen and Landgravine Elisabeth of Hesse-Marburg.
In February 1506 she married Count John III of Wied. Their wedding was part of a double ceremony, as Elisabeth’s sister Mary also married Count Jobst I of Holstein-Schauenburg-Pinneberg. The celebrations were very grand, with large expenses and a Beilager (wedding celebration) in Dillenburg on 16 February 1506.
John III was the son of Frederick IV and Agnes of Virneburg. He became Count of Wied after his brothers renounced their rights. Elisabeth’s mother-in-law was a niece of Genoveva of Virneburg, who was married to Elisabeth’s great-uncle, Henry II of Nassau-Siegen.
John III died in 1533 and was succeeded by their son John IV. Elisabeth’s brother, William I the Rich, once sought support for the Reformation from Archbishop Herman V of Cologne, who visited Siegen to speak with him.
Elisabeth died on 3 June 1559 in Dillenburg, possibly while attending a triple wedding of her nephew John and nieces Anne and Elisabeth a few days later.
