Ariane in Naxos
Ariadne in Naxos, also called Bacchus and Ariadne or Bacchus discovering Ariadne in Naxos, is a 1635 oil painting by the Le Nain brothers. It measures 102 by 152 cm (40 by 60 in) and is housed in the Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Orléans in France. The scene shows Bacchus discovering Ariadne on the island of Naxos after she was abandoned by Theseus. The painting was initially attributed to Louis Le Nain, though some scholars doubt this and think Mathieu Le Nain might be the artist. The story of Bacchus and Ariadne has inspired many artists, including Titian, Leigh Hunt, and the composer Richard Strauss (the opera Ariadne auf Naxos).
