Highland Township, Wabasha County, Minnesota
Highland Township is a small rural area in Wabasha County, Minnesota. It was organized in 1858 as Smithfield Township and later renamed Highland because the land sits on high ground. The township covers 35.8 square miles, all land, with a tiny amount of water, and sits about 1,161 feet above sea level.
As of the 2000 census, 471 people lived there in 147 households and 120 families. The population density was about 13 people per square mile. There were 155 housing units.
The racial makeup was 99.79% White and 0.21% Asian.
Households: 46.3% had children under 18; 71.4% were married couples; 4.1% had a female householder with no husband; 17.7% were non-families; 12.9% were individuals; 6.1% had someone 65 or older living alone. The average household size was 3.20 and the average family size was 3.58.
Age distribution: 32.3% under 18, 11.0% 18–24, 25.3% 25–44, 21.2% 45–64, and 10.2% 65 or older. The median age was 34.
Gender: For every 100 females, there were 111.2 males; for every 100 females 18 and over, there were 121.5 males.
Income: The median household income was $49,375; the median family income was $55,139. Males earned a median of $32,232 and females $22,000. The per capita income was $18,747. About 8.9% of families and 8.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.4% of those under 18 and 24.4% of those 65 or over.
