Edward Payson Bassford (1837–1912) was a leading architect in St. Paul, Minnesota, during the late 19th century. He was born June 7, 1837, in Calais, Maine, and moved to St. Paul in 1866. After working in the office of Abraham Radcliffe, he started his own firm. By the 1870s he was St. Paul’s busiest architect, designing houses, schools, and many commercial buildings. His firm also employed several architects who later became famous, including Cass Gilbert, Augustus Gauger, Edward J. Donohue, Silas Jacobson, and Charles Bassford. He died July 20, 1912, in Osakis, Minnesota. Several of his designs are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
