George W. Breslauer
George W. Breslauer (born March 4, 1946, in New York City) is an American social sciences scholar and former executive vice chancellor and provost of UC Berkeley. He specializes in Soviet and Russian politics and foreign relations and has written or edited twelve books on these topics. He joined UC Berkeley’s political science department in 1971, became a full professor in 1990, and retired in 2014 as professor of the graduate school.
He earned his BA (1966), MA (1968), and PhD (1973) in political science from the University of Michigan and also holds a certificate in Russian studies (1968). He is the older brother of chemist Kenneth Breslauer and, through his sister, the brother-in-law of Bob Frankford.
Awards include the UC Berkeley Distinguished Teaching Award (1997); Chancellor’s Professor (1998); Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2014); and the Clark Kerr Award for distinguished leadership in higher education (2015).
