Khairun Sundari is a 2004 Bangladeshi romantic folk-drama film directed and written by A. K. Shohel. It stars Moushumi as Khairun and Ferdous Ahmed as her husband. Based on a village folk tale from Jamalpur in the 1940s, the story blends love, betrayal, and tragedy in rural life. The movie was a major hit in Bangladesh and became the highest-grossing Bangladeshi film of 2004. The title track “Khairun Lo Tor Lomba Mathar Kesh,” sung by Momtaz, became famous. It was remade in India as Praner Swami (2007) with Ferdous Ahmed.

Plot: In Merurchar village, Khairun, daughter of a snake charmer named Azgar, marries Fazal Haq, a local betel-vendor. A jealous friend sets their home on fire, and Fazal accidentally kills his own son. He later teams up with criminals to murder Khairun, and her body is found in the river. The village protests lead to Fazal’s arrest and long imprisonment. After his release, he remarries. Khairun, meanwhile, becomes a local legend known as Khairun Sundari, a symbol of doomed love and betrayal.

Other details: Running time 151 minutes. Language: Bengali. Country: Bangladesh. Box office around ৳5 crore at release (about US$710,000 in 2024).
