ES Sétif in African Football

ES Sétif is an Algerian club that has taken part in many CAF competitions. They have represented Algeria in the CAF Champions League 11 times, the CAF Confederation Cup 4 times, and the now-defunct Cup Winners’ Cup twice. Their first entry was in 1981 in the African Cup Winners’ Cup, where they lost 1-0 to Kampala City Council.

Biggest wins and losses include a 7-1 victory over ASC Linguère in 1991 and a 5-0 defeat to Union Douala in 1981. A notable moment came in 1991 when ES Sétif reached the semi-finals and Malik Zorgane scored the club’s first continental hat-trick against SC Gagnoa.

Domestic success helped them return to continental play, with a league title in 2006-07—the first in twenty years. They also reached the CAF Confederation Cup final in 2008 but lost to Stade Malien; Abdelmalek Ziaya was the top scorer in that run with 15 goals.

Their crowning achievement came in the 2014 CAF Champions League, where they beat ASFA Yennenga and Coton Sport to reach the group stage. In Group B they faced CS Sfaxien, Espérance de Tunis, and Al-Ahly Benghazi. ES Sétif defeated TP Mazembe on away goals in the semi-finals and then beat AS Vita Club on away goals in the final, winning the CAF Champions League for the first time in 26 years and becoming the first Algerian club to win the modern competition. This qualified them for the FIFA Club World Cup, where they were defeated 1-0 by Auckland City. They followed up by winning the CAF Super Cup in 2015, beating Al-Ahly on penalties (6-5).

Key players in African competition history include Akram Djahnit, one of the club’s most-capped players with 60 appearances, and Abdelmalek Ziaya, the club’s top scorer in African competitions with 22 goals.
