Dolores Umbridge
Dolores Jane Umbridge is a fictional villain in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, first appearing in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The Ministry of Magic sends her to Hogwarts to take control from Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. She becomes the High Inquisitor and, briefly, the Headmistress, using her power to tighten the Ministry’s grip on the school.
Umbridge looks sweet and proper, with pink clothing and a smiling face, but she is cruel, power‑hungry, and bigoted. She refuses to teach practical Defense Against the Dark Arts and instead imposes strict rules. She bans student clubs and Quidditch, and forces Harry to write with a cursed quill that scars his hand with the words “I must not tell lies.”
She suppresses dissent and tries to expel Harry. Umbridge sacks Divination professor Trelawney and clashes with other teachers. After a confrontation with centaurs, she is removed from Hogwarts and Dumbledore is restored as headmaster.
Back at the Ministry, she enforces harsh laws against Muggle‑born witches and wizards and uses dementors to threaten people. She also comes into possession of Slytherin’s Horcrux locket, which Harry and Hermione later recover and destroy.
After Voldemort’s defeat, Umbridge is imprisoned in Azkaban for life. She is widely regarded as one of the most hated villains in the series. Imelda Staunton plays her in the films, and her name hints at sorrow and taking offense.
