Delovak Athara
Delovak Athara (Between Two Worlds) is a 1966 Sri Lankan drama directed by Lester James Peries, with a screenplay by Peries and Tissa Abeysekara. It stars Tony Ranasinghe and Suvineetha Weerasinghe in the lead roles and is known as a character study of Sri Lanka’s newly rich society.
The story follows Nissanka, who is engaged to Shiranee. He goes to a club, meets his old friend Chitra, and they drive home together. They accidentally hit a pedestrian and flee the scene. Nissanka’s family tries to cover up the accident while Chitra urges him to turn himself in. A witness reports the car’s license plate, and the police begin an investigation. Tensions rise as misunderstandings and lies unravel, and eventually Nissanka and Chitra decide to go to the police and confess.
Delovak Athara was a critical and box-office success for Peries, becoming his most successful film at the time. It earned praise from Sinhala critics and played at European film festivals, including Valladolid in Spain. The film was re-screened in 2018 for a film festival in Kandy. Production details include a budget of about 200,000 rupees, a runtime of 103 minutes, and language of Sinhala.
