DeKalb County Confederate Monument
The DeKalb County Confederate Monument was a 30-foot stone obelisk in Decatur, Georgia, placed in 1908 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy near the old county courthouse to honor Confederate soldiers and sailors. The base carried several inscriptions praising the Confederacy, loyalty, and the supposed virtues of those who fought for it.
In June 2020, after protests sparked by George Floyd’s death, a Superior Court judge ordered the monument’s removal, deeming it a public nuisance. The monument was taken down on June 18, 2020, as part of a wave of removals from that era; a nearby statue of Thomas Jefferson was removed a few days later.
In January 2021, city officials announced plans to replace the monument with a statue honoring civil rights leader John Lewis, created by Basil Watson. The John Lewis statue was unveiled in August 2024 on the same site.
