Jennifer Short
Jennifer Short (born 1971) is a retired United States Air Force lieutenant general. She last served as the Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense from October 2024 to February 2025. Earlier, she was the Director of Legislative Affairs for the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force and the Deputy Director for Strategic Planning and Policy at United States Indo-Pacific Command. She also commanded the 23rd Wing at Moody Air Force Base, Georgia.
Short is a command pilot with more than 1,800 hours in the A-10 Thunderbolt and more than 430 combat hours in operations including Southern Watch, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom.
Education: She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Arizona State University in 1993 and completed Officer Training School at Maxwell Air Force Base in 1995 as a distinguished graduate.
Personal life: She is the third generation in her family to reach general officer rank in the Air Force. Her father, Michael Short, retired as a lieutenant general after a career that included Kosovo; he flew 276 combat missions in Vietnam and received the Silver Star. Her brother, Christopher M. Short, retired as a brigadier general. She married Scott Evens on October 23, 2010.
Awards: Defense Superior Service Medal and the Legion of Merit (three times).
