He played from 1990 to 2002 for the Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago Cubs. He batted and threw right-handed. He debuted with Oakland on August 21, 1990 and finished his career with the Cubs on July 30, 2002. His career stats include a .250 batting average, 27 home runs, 342 RBIs, and 247 stolen bases. He won a Gold Glove in 1994 with the Giants and was known as one of the era’s top base stealers.
Lewis appeared in the postseason with the Reds in 1995 and with the Red Sox in 1998 and 1999. He was traded to the Pirates on July 31, 2002, but did not report and chose to retire instead. Dusty Baker, who managed the Giants while Lewis was there, later named his own son after him.
Defense was a strength for Lewis. He started his career with 243 straight games without an error, later reaching 267 consecutive error-free games in 1993. The streak ended on June 30, 1994. The streak would be broken in 2015 by Nick Markakis. Lewis finished with a .994 fielding percentage, 16 errors in 2,836 chances over 9,483 outfield innings.
After his playing days, he served as an assistant coach at California State University, East Bay, leaving the position in 2016.
