Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest 1973
Sweden took part in the Eurovision Song Contest 1973 with the song “You’re Summer,” performed by Nova and the Dolls. The song was written by Monica Dominique and Carl-Axel Dominique, with lyrics by Lars Forssell.
Sweden’s entry was chosen through Melodifestivalen 1973, held on 10 February in Stockholm and hosted by Alicia Lundberg. Ten songwriters were invited by Sveriges Radio (SR) to compete, but the overall Melodifestivalen winner was “Sommaren som aldrig säger nej,” performed by Malta. To avoid confusion with the country Malta (which did not participate that year), the act competed in Eurovision under the name The Nova (with backing group The Dolls). The song was translated into English as “You’re Summer” for the contest.
Among the Melodifestivalen 1973 competitors was a group that would become ABBA. They finished third with “Ring Ring.”
The Eurovision final took place in Luxembourg, and Sweden was drawn to perform 12th. They finished 5th with 94 points. The voting system had each participating country appoint two jurors (one under 25 and one over 25) who awarded between 1 and 5 points to each song, except their own country. Sweden’s jurors were Lena Andersson and Lars Samuelson.
