Márcio Araújo (footballer, born 1960)
Márcio Longo de Araújo, born on 7 May 1960 in São José do Rio Pardo, Brazil, is a Brazilian football coach and former player. He played mainly as a central defender or defensive midfielder.
Playing career:
He came through the youth system at São Paulo and made his first‑team debut in 1978. He began to play more regularly in 1983 after a loan to São Bento. He later played for Noroeste (1987), Portuguesa (1988–1990) and Coritiba (1991), where he appeared in five league games before retiring as a player.
Coaching career:
After retiring, Araújo started coaching, beginning with Ponte Preta’s under‑23s and then São Paulo’s under‑20 team. He led São Paulo’s youth side to win the 1993 Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior, with Rogério Ceni as their goalkeeper, and he also served as interim coach for the São Paulo first team on occasion in 1993. Over the years, he coached or assisted at many clubs, including Corinthians, Palmeiras (as assistant and then head coach in 1997), Inter de Limeira, Paraná, Coritiba, Atlético Mineiro, Rio Claro, Fortaleza, Cruzeiro (as assistant), Avaí, Goiás, Grêmio Barueri, Figueirense, Sertãozinho, Bahia, São Caetano, Bragantino and worked as an assistant at Fluminense, São Paulo and Santos.
Current role:
In 2024, Márcio Araújo was named coordinator of São Paulo’s youth sector.
