Crabtree was named for pioneer John J. Crabtree; Crabtree Creek and Crabtree Lake in the area were named after him. The railroad station and the community were named for John Crabtree’s cousin Fletcher Crabtree. In 1880 a branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad came through, and a depot was built at the Santiam Wagon Road intersection. The post office opened on February 28, 1887.
Key local history includes: John Meyer building the first store in 1890 (which burned down before 1923); the Crabtree Christian Church, established in 1909 and dedicated in 1910; a hardware store built by William Turnidge in 1913 that became Sillman Wirt in 1917; the Crabtree Tavern, which operated after Prohibition until 2013; a garage built by George Vana in 1919 that became Crabtree Garage until 1937 and later a barber shop; a new general store built in 1923 that later housed Knight’s General Store from 1949 to 1975. In 1973 Oregon Route 226 was rerouted with a new bridge over the South Santiam River, bypassing Crabtree.
Today the town has a fire station and a Christian church. The time zone is Pacific Time (UTC-8, DST UTC-7).
