Carpe Diem (Hande Yener album)
Carpe Diem is the fourteenth studio album by Turkish singer Hande Yener. Part I, which has ten songs, was released on 2 October 2020 by Poll Production. The album blends pop and electronic music with elements of synth-pop, funky house, deep house and R&B. Eight tracks were written and arranged by Berksan and Misha; one track by Fikri Karayel and Deeperise; and another by Mete Özgencil and Devrim Karaoğlu. The eight Berksan tracks were created by composing the music first and then adding the lyrics.
The title Carpe Diem means “seize the day” or “live in the moment,” and Yener chose it to reflect that idea. The album was originally planned for April 2020 but was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It finally arrived in October as Part I, with a second part planned for the future.
Critics praised the album, saying Yener renewed her sound and that Carpe Diem stands out from typical pop. In its first week, it topped D&R’s best-seller list and the iTunes Turkey charts.
Two music videos from Part I were released: for the title track Carpe Diem and for Aşk Sandım, both directed by Aytekin Yalçın. A third video, for Boşuna, followed in 2021.
The album cover photography was by Aytekin Yalçın, with styling by Italian designer Gabriele Papi; the shoots took place in Milan, Istanbul and Marmaris. The cover was censored on Iranian music platforms, blanking Yener’s image.
Promotional singles Pencere (released 28 March 2020) and Bela (3 July 2020) came before the album; Bela peaked at number two on Turkey’s official chart. Pencere was not included in Part I.
Track highlights include: Aşk Sandım (synth-pop/rock), Bulut (80s synthwave with guitar), Senden Çok (synth-pop), Aşk Elinde (dance), Başka Dudaklar (Garage house), Boşuna (ballad, written by Mete Özgencil), Carpe Diem (lead title track), Melekler ve Şeytanlar (electro-pop), Kaç (mid-tempo) and Yolcu (trap-pop). The album’s release was followed by plans for Part II in 2021.
