Peshawar is in a lowland valley near the Khyber Pass in northwest Pakistan. It has very hot summers and cool winters, with most rain in winter and some from the monsoon.

Winter lasts from mid-November to March. Summer runs from May to September and is extremely hot. In summer, average high temperatures are above 40°C (104°F) and average lows are about 25°C (77°F). In winter, average highs are around 18°C (65°F) and lows near 4°C (39°F). Snow is very rare in the city, though nearby hills can get snow during very cold spells; a notable snow event happened in February 1929.

Peshawar is not in the main monsoon region, but occasional monsoon showers do occur. The strongest winter rainfall appears in March, while the strongest summer rain shows up in August. The average annual precipitation is about 500 mm (20 inches), and humidity ranges from about 46% in June to around 76% in August.

The city faces air and water quality problems as it grows, and some green spaces have been lost to development.
