City of God – 10 Years Later (Cidade de Deus: 10 Anos Depois) is a 2013 Brazilian documentary directed by Cavi Borges and Luciano Vidigal. In about 70 minutes, it checks in on how the lives of actors from the 2002 film City of God have changed ten years after filming. The documentary features actors who played Dadinho/Lil’ Zé, Bené/Benny, Angélica, and Mané Galinha/Knockout Ned.

Borges invited Vidigal to help make the film. Fernando Meirelles was asked to produce but declined, though he contributed to the research. Of roughly 50 people involved in the original movie, 18 were interviewed for the documentary. The actors were paid $90 for their interviews. To raise money, the team used crowdfunding and held parties. Some community members were uneasy about revisiting the violence of the original film, but Borges hoped the project would change how the world views the area.

The film premiered at Festival do Rio in October 2013, but the initial showing was canceled due to unrelated protests, causing a delay. Its international premiere followed at the Miami International Film Festival in March 2014. The Miami New Times gave a mixed review, noting that fans of City of God would enjoy it, but as a standalone look at how a hit movie affected a poor neighborhood, it felt somewhat incomplete.

Details: Budget about $90,500; running time 70 minutes; language Portuguese; distributed by Livres Distribuidora de Audiovisual (Livres Filmes).
