John Glenn High School (Westland, Michigan)
John Glenn High School is a public high school in Westland, Michigan. It serves students from parts of Westland, Canton Township, Inkster, and Dearborn Heights. The school is part of the Wayne-Westland Community Schools district and is one of two traditional high schools in the district. It opened in 1964 and was named after astronaut John Glenn, who became the first American to orbit the Earth two years earlier. The school has a space-themed identity, with the Rockets as the team name, the Satellite as the yearbook, the Explorer as the newspaper, and the Gantry as the school store.
The campus features its own planetarium and expanded over the years to add new wings for Fine Arts and Special Education, a larger gym, and its own football and baseball fields. When it first opened, John Glenn High School did not have its own football field and played home games at Wayne Memorial High School. The school has undergone several grade-structure changes over time and settled into grades 9–12 in 1995.
As of the 2023–2024 school year, about 1,468 students attend John Glenn High School, with roughly 22 students for every teacher. In 2021–2022, about half of the students were economically disadvantaged. The Rockets compete in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association, and the school colors are red, white, and blue. A notable former coach is Lloyd Carr, who coached the Rockets before moving on to the University of Michigan.
