Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes
Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes is a fan-made game created by Kajar Laboratories, led by Agent 12 with ZeaLitY and Chrono'99. It is a ROM hack of the Super Nintendo game Chrono Trigger and is meant to be an unofficial chapter between Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. The story takes place five years after Chrono Trigger and reunites the original party as they travel across different time periods to stop a foe trying to rewrite history. The game adds new maps, graphics, and sprites, and uses a battle system similar to the original Active Time Battle. It also includes new mini-games, such as a Coliseum battle mode and a casino.
Crimson Echoes was developed from 2004 to 2009 and was about 98% complete, offering roughly 35 hours of gameplay and ten different endings. It was planned to be released as an IPS patch to avoid distributing a full ROM. However, Square Enix issued a cease-and-desist letter in May 2009, canceling the project. Despite the cancellation, leaked alpha and beta versions later circulated online, allowing fans to play the game up to its end. The plot weaves elements from both official games, featuring a revived King Zeal manipulated by Lavos and events across many eras, including timelines from ancient times to future settlements. The story sets up connections and themes that echo into Chrono Cross, while ending with the team returning to their own time and hinting at future plans, such as Project Kid.
