Wansbeck District

Wansbeck District was a local government district in south-east Northumberland, England. Its main towns were Ashington, Bedlington and Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. The area ran along the North Sea coast, north of the Tyneside area.

About 61,100 people lived there in 2001.

Formation and name: Wansbeck District was created on 1 April 1974 by merging the urban districts of Ashington, Bedlingtonshire and Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. It was named after the River Wansbeck.

Bordering areas: It bordered Blyth Valley district to the south, with the River Blyth forming the boundary.

Local government: The district was governed by Wansbeck District Council.

Abolition and after: On 1 April 2009, the district was dissolved as part of a wide local-government reorganization. Its responsibilities were taken over by Northumberland County Council, which became a unitary authority for the area.
