Chateaux (band)
Chateaux, who were also known as Stealer, were a British heavy metal band from Cheltenham, formed in 1981. They were part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and released three albums in the 1980s on Ebony Records.
The original lineup was Tim Broughton (guitar), Alex Houston (bass and vocals), and Andre Baylis (drums). Ebony Records featured them on the 1982 Metal Maniaxe compilation, and they changed their name to Chateaux. They contributed the song "Young Blood," with Houston on vocals; the track was released as a single backed with "Fight to the Last."
In 1983 they released their debut album, Chained and Desperate, on Ebony, produced by Daryl Johnson. Steve Grimmett (who would later lead Grim Reaper and also play with Onslaught) contributed vocals as a guest, though the band treated his appearance as a guest.
Their second album, Fire Power (1984), saw lineup changes: Baylis and Houston left and were replaced by Krys Mason (bass/vocals) and Chris Dadson (drums). The album received mixed reviews and many felt it didn’t match the energy of the debut.
The third album, Highly Strung (1985), sold poorly, and the band stopped touring outside their local area, eventually disbanding in 1986.
In 2003 Sanctuary Records released the Fight to the Last 2CD compilation, reissuing all three albums and the debut single.
Steve Grimmett went on to front Grim Reaper and later joined Onslaught.
