Chat Room (novel)
Chat Room is a thriller novel by Barbara Biggs, published in Australia in 2006 by Micklind Enterprises. The paperback edition has about 120 pages.
The story follows 13-year-old Samantha, who is very lonely after moving from Sydney to Melbourne. With both parents working long hours, she spends time in chat rooms and makes new online friends. There she meets a man who goes by the name Robin. He pretends to be 17 but is actually 27. Robin makes Sam feel special and charms her with his intelligence and good looks. He tells her to keep his secret, which is his real age. Eventually he reveals he is 27, which upsets her.
After ten stressful days, she goes back online to talk to him. They confess they like each other and decide to meet. Samantha goes to meet him and finds him attractive as they walk together. While Sam is away, Erica, her babysitter, realizes Sam is missing and finds emails from Robin. She calls the police and they search for her. Robin is caught.
Sam is told what happened. Robin has previously faced child sexual abuse charges in court and has been released on those charges before due to a lack of evidence. He is now arrested and faces prison.
