Ravi Deep
Ravi Deep, born Ravi Parkash on 30 December 1954 in Firozpur, Punjab, India, is a theatre and television director, writer, and actor. He is married to Sunita Gupta.
He started acting on stage in school and got involved in modern theatre in Kapurthala, where he helped turn the town into a hub of new theatre with colleagues Lalit Behl, Pramod Moutho, Satish Sharma and Harjit Walia. He earned a Master’s in Dramatic Art from Punjabi University, Patiala in 1977 and worked as a freelance theatre actor, director and writer.
Ravi Deep wrote and directed several short plays, including Rang Nagari (The City of Colors), Kheench Rahe Hain (Pulling On), Kaun Nachaye Nach? (Who Makes Us Dance?), Satya Katha (The True Story) and Mukti Bahini (The Liberation Force). These plays won inter-varsity contests for four consecutive years (1978–81). A collection titled Rangmanch Ke Teen Rang, featuring the first three plays, was published in March 1982. His works are still staged yearly, especially at university contests. He also created children’s plays Bagula Bhagat and Bahurupiya. His anthology of stories, Bilav, was published in 2014.
In April 1983, Ravi Deep joined Doordarshan, where he moved into programme production, writing and direction for television. He produced and directed TV serials such as Buniad, Lafafi and Parchhaven, along with many teleplays, telefilms, documentaries and other TV programs. He won the Doordarshan Award in 2008 in the Literary Adoption Category and has four other nominations.
He later earned a Master’s in Political Science (1980) and an MPhil (1992). He served as the Programme Director of ABU Robocon India from 2007 to 2014. His MPhil thesis was Politics & Theatre in Punjab.
