Chadron State College
Chadron State College (CSC) is a public college in Chadron, Nebraska, and part of the Nebraska State College System. It opened in 1911 as Chadron State Normal College, later became Chadron State Teachers College (1921–1964), and has been Chadron State College since 1964. The motto is “Follow Your Frontier,” and the campus spans 281 acres.
Campus and facilities: CSC has eight academic buildings, six athletic facilities, three administration buildings, and five residence halls. The campus includes High Rise, an 11-story dorm that was the tallest building in western Nebraska. Five campus buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Academics: CSC offers more than 49 bachelor’s degree majors and eight professional studies options. Pre-professional programs in health sciences are available, including the Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP) with the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The college also partners with Western Nebraska Community College through the Panhandle Advantage Program. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
Enrollment and diversity: Enrollment runs around 1,600–2,100 students in recent years. In Fall 2024, about 1,690 undergraduates and 408 graduate students were enrolled. The student body is roughly 76% White, 12% Hispanic, 4% Black, 4% two or more races, 2% American Indian, 1% international, and 1% unknown. About 37% of students come from low-income families, while 63% come from more affluent backgrounds.
Athletics: CSC Eagles compete in NCAA Division II as part of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The college sponsors 12 varsity teams, including football, basketball, cross country, track and field, golf, softball, volleyball, and wrestling (men’s and women’s).
Presidents: The college has had many presidents since 1911; the current president is Jodi Kupper (2025–present).
Notable alumni: Tim Walz, Danny Woodhead, Don Beebe, and several other leaders and athletes.
