Chitral is a city on the Chitral River in northern Pakistan, in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. It is the capital of Lower Chitral District and was once the capital of the old Chitral princely state.

As of 2023, about 57,000 people live in Chitral. The main local language is Khowar, Urdu is the official language, and Kalasha is spoken by a small community. The city sits at about 1,500 meters (around 4,900 feet) above sea level.

Chitral has a long history. It was influenced by ancient empires in its early centuries and became the center of the Chitral state from 1571. In 1895 there was a notable siege involving British and Sikh forces. After the partition of British India in 1947, Chitral joined Pakistan and was later integrated as a district in 1969–1972.

The climate is dry and mostly hot in summer, with cold winters and occasional heavy snowfall at higher elevations. The area is near the Hindu Kush mountains, including Tirich Mir, the region’s high peak.

Chitral is known for its scenic valley, historic forts such as the Chitral Fort (Shahi Qilla) and local mosques. It remains a cultural hub, with the Khowar-speaking people and diverse traditions that attract visitors to the region.
