John Scully (journalist)
John Scully (born 1941) is a Canadian writer, producer and journalist. He was born in Westport, New Zealand and did not go to university. He started as a photographer for the Wellington Evening Post, then moved into television reporting and production at the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation.
From 1965 to 1974, he worked at BBC TV in London as a senior editor, producer and writer, starting as a summer-relief writer in the TV newsroom and rising to duty editor.
In 1974, Scully was recruited as the senior field producer for Canada’s Global network. He stayed in Canada to work for CBC, taking on roles such as Documentary Producer for W5, News Producer for CTV News, and Documentary Producer for CBC’s Newsmagazine and The Journal. He also served as Executive Producer at Close Up on TVNZ, and later as Senior Field Producer for The Journal at CBC, before becoming Head of Current Affairs at Television New Zealand.
From 1990 to 1994 he held various positions with news organizations including The 5th Estate and CBC’s South Asia Bureau. Between 2003 and 2007 he was the Senior Producer of 360 Vision on Vision TV. Scully has won numerous international awards for news and documentaries.
He is the author of Am I Dead Yet: A Journalist’s Perspective on Terror, a book that follows his experiences from Vietnam to Baghdad and shares his thoughts on terrorism, its roots and its reasons. He is married and lives in Toronto, Ontario. In 2022 he said he planned to seek assisted suicide under MAiD after suffering PTSD from years of reporting in war-torn countries. His journalism has earned Gemini nominations for Best Documentary and a Gold Medal from the Houston International Film Festival for Best Coverage of a Continuing News Story.
