Central Burying Ground, Boston
Central Burying Ground is a cemetery on Boston Common in Boston, Massachusetts. It was established in 1756 and sits on Boylston Street between Tremont Street and Charles Street. Notable people buried there include Gilbert Stuart, the artist famous for portraits of George and Martha Washington, and William Billings, the composer of the colonial hymn "Chester." Also buried are Samuel Sprague and his son Charles Sprague, an early American poet. Samuel Sprague took part in the Boston Tea Party and fought in the American Revolutionary War. In the 1890s, during the construction of the Tremont Street subway, burials were found nearby and moved to a mass grave within the cemetery.
