Tell Me a Lie is a song written by Mickey Buckins and Barbara Wyrick. It was first recorded by Lynn Anderson for her 1974 album What a Man My Man Is. Sami Jo Cole released it as a single later that year, reaching number 21 on the U.S. pop charts and number 14 on the U.S. Adult Contemporary chart, and it also charted in Canada (pop at 17 and AC at 27).

Bettye LaVette recorded an R&B version for Motown in 1981, released as the title track of her 1982 album.

Janie Fricke covered the song in 1983. It was included on her 1982 album It Ain’t Easy and was released as the first single from her Love Lies album in September 1983, becoming her fourth number-one hit on the U.S. country charts. The Fricke version did not chart on the pop singles chart. In 2004 Fricke released a bluegrass remake of the song on The Bluegrass Sessions.
