Matt Murray (ice hockey, born 1994)
Matt Murray is a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who plays for the Seattle Kraken in the NHL. Born May 25, 1994, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, he is 6 feet 4 inches tall, weighs about 178 pounds, and catches left.
Murray was drafted 83rd overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2012. He won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 2016 and again in 2017, becoming the first goalie to win back-to-back titles in his first two NHL seasons.
In the minor leagues, Murray starred for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and set a record AHL shutout streak of 304 minutes, 11 seconds in 2015. He earned multiple rookie and first-team honors in the AHL before making his NHL debut with Pittsburgh in December 2015 and becoming the team’s starter in 2016–17.
His career has been hampered by injuries, including concussions in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, he was traded to the Ottawa Senators, who signed him to a four-year contract. In 2022, Ottawa traded him to the Toronto Maple Leafs. He faced several injuries there, including a hip problem that required surgery in 2023, and spent time with Toronto’s AHL affiliate in 2024 before being recalled to the NHL.
In July 2025, Murray signed a one-year deal with the Seattle Kraken. Internationally, he represented Team North America at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Championship, where Canada won silver. Murray’s father is Scottish and his mother is Dutch; he married Christina Sirignano in 2019.
