Casaluna
Casaluna is a small river in Haute-Corse, Corsica, France. It is 25.17 kilometers long and is a tributary of the Golo. The Casaluna rises west of Monte Muffraje in the Carticasi area at about 1,559 meters above sea level and flows generally northwest to join the Golo south of Ponte Leccia at about 207 meters above sea level. The river crosses several communes, including Aiti, Cambia, Carticasi, Castineta, Érone, Gavignano, Lano, Morosaglia, Saliceto and San-Lorenzo. In its lower course, the Casaluna forms the eastern boundary of the Forêt de Pineto.
On 24 November 2016, a very violent storm hit central Corsica, causing widespread flooding. An ice jam on the Casaluna washed away a centuries-old bridge that carried the D39 road about 3 kilometers above its mouth. A temporary bridge was placed over the river in mid-January 2017, but it could not carry heavy vehicles. In May 2020, work on a permanent replacement was scheduled. Some locals wanted the old bridge rebuilt, but that would be vulnerable to similar storms, which were expected to become more common with climate change. A public inquiry was launched on 23 July 2020 before environmental authorization for the project.
The river’s flow has been measured at Gavignano since 2013. The maximum instantaneous flow recorded was 177 cubic meters per second on 16 March 2015, and the maximum daily flow was 81.9 cubic meters per second on 2 October 2015.
