Catacombs of Milos
The Catacombs of Milos are an ancient underground Christian cemetery on the Greek island of Milos in the Cyclades. They date from the 1st to the 5th century AD. The catacombs are near the village of Trypiti, close to Melos’ old public square and about 200 meters east of the ancient theatre. The name Trypiti comes from many caves carved into the volcanic rock, which locals still use as storerooms and stables. In ancient times, these caves were used as family burial chambers. The passageways vary in width from 1 to 5 meters and in height from 1.6 to 2.5 meters. Besides tombs carved into the walls, many graves were dug into the ground and covered with rough stones of different sizes. The catacombs are underground.
