Founders Day (South Africa)
Founders Day, also known as Stigtingsdag or Jan van Riebeeck's Day, was a public holiday in South Africa until 1994. It was created on 6 April 1952 to mark the 300th anniversary of the Dutch arrival, which began with Jan van Riebeeck landing at Table Bay on 6 April 1652 and the founding of Cape Town. From 1980 it was called Founders Day (Stigtingsdag). The holiday ended after South Africa’s first universal franchise election in 1994 and the new constitution. Today it is still celebrated in Orania, an Afrikaner enclave.
