Dropmire is an NSA program that monitors foreign embassies and diplomatic staff, including officials from NATO member countries. It was revealed in June 2013 after whistleblower Edward Snowden leaked documents to The Guardian. Reports said at least 38 embassies were being watched, with some spying dating back to 2007. Earlier in 2013, The Guardian reported that the NSA spied on diplomats during the 2009 G-20 London Summit, though the program’s name wasn’t revealed at the time. In 2010, it was revealed that U.S. agencies spied on Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations secretary-general, though it wasn’t clear this was part of a systematic program.
